Why is Humility So Important in Recovery?

Humility is one of the most important spiritual principles that we choose to live by in recovery. However, it is also the most misunderstood. In our state of addiction, we were filled with selfishness and self-centeredness. We attempted to assert control over everything in our lives, and feeding our addiction was the most important thing to us. In sobriety, we choose to humble ourselves because we realize that we are not the center of the universe. We began to enhance our spiritual life through our connection with a higher power of our own understanding, and humbled ourselves.

Through the recognition that we were unable to manage our own lives, we sought a power greater than ourselves to “take the wheel” in our lives. We could not run the show ourselves—we had tried before and it ultimately took us deeper into the confines of addiction and alcoholism. All of our pride and ego-driven behaviors resulted only in harm to ourselves and others, but by humbling ourselves and recognizing our true place in the world, we began feeling a sense of freedom and spirituality than aided us in our progression in sobriety. It seems counterintuitive that, by giving up our ego and selfish drive, we are able to progress, but the collective experiences of countless men and women in recovery have proven this concept to be true. The Big Book of Alcoholics Anonymous explains that, “Almost none of us liked the self-searching, the leveling of our pride, the confession of shortcoming which the process requires for its successful consummation. But we saw that it had really worked in others, we had come to believe in the hopelessness and futility of life as we had been living it. When, therefore, we were approached by those in whom the problem had been solved, there was nothing left for us but to pick up the simple kit of spiritual tools laid at our feet.” By leveling our pride and confessing our shortcomings, we humble ourselves to the idea that we are, in fact, fallible. Recognition of our place in the universe, and that there is something greater than ourselves running the show, and coming to rely upon that higher power to direct our thought and actions, gives us a new sense of freedom and understanding that moves us into a state of serenity in our newfound sobriety.
