Why Does Joy Bring Loss?

In life, we cannot always be riding on the high roller coaster of perfection. There will always be small and great moments of joy, just like there will be moments of sorrow. It’s almost as though you can’t have one without the other—and that’s okay. In recovery, we get to do things that we enjoy, meet people we come to love, and pursue whatever it is that sets our hearts on fire. All of these wonderful things make for a fulfilling life, and when we inevitably lose people, jobs, possessions, etc., we all go through the grieving process, and in recovery, we go through it together.

As human beings, we are very much a part of the circle of life, yet we seem to forget our place in it’s process. We all have a death sentence and there is no getting around that. What would your life look like if you remembered this fact on a daily basis? You may envision yourself spending more time with loved ones, maybe taking more exotic vacations, or crossing things of your bucket list. You would still do all of these things and love your friends and family, even though you know you will lose them. The deepest love comes with the greatest joy and the most profound sorrow—and yet, it is all worth it.

Friendships will come and go, which you have probably experienced by coming into recovery. We fall in lust and love, and we lose those feelings. Relationships that last a lifetime will ultimately fall into the circle of life. This is all part of the human experience. The gratitude that people who are in recovery have for their lives would not be there had they not known the lonely darkness of addiction.

Our joy for life was born from having experienced deep pain, fear, and loss. Whenever we are going through a difficult time, we have to lean on others and we have to remember that this too, shall pass. If you are hurting, know that you won’t feel like this forever. Keep memories of joy and love close to your heart and live in gratitude for the life you have been given to experience these moments.
