What Obstacles Are Signals?

There are too many bumps in the road of life to possibly count. It is far too easy to get discouraged, give up, and walk away from your goals. If you let them, obstacles can derail you, or, you can use them to enhance your life and your growth. Everyone knows that life isn’t fair, but hardship doesn’t care about what is or isn’t fair. Anyone who has ever experienced addiction knows all of these things well. Those who are lucky enough to have made it into recovery, have overcome the biggest obstacle of all. If you have gotten through addiction, you are stronger than you think because you can get through anything.

There are countless distractions in life that can take away from our values and our purpose. Many of us easily fall into the trap of comparing ourselves with others. This is especially dangerous for people in recovery. Never compare your insides with the outsides of others. If you start basing your own self-worth on other people, you will lose your way—quickly. We are all different, and we all have different paths. When you lose sight of who you are and what you want, you lose sight of what you need to do to get where you’re going. If you want to keep going, you have to deal with what you’ve got.

When you make mistakes, you are taught humility. Humility is essential in recovery. It keeps you grounded, it reminds you of where you came from and where you can return. When you encounter an obstacle, you don’t necessarily need to change where you’re going. Often times, obstacles are just a signal to modify your path. This isn’t a change in destination, only a change in how you get there. Rarely do things work out just how we wanted them to, and this is life’s wonderfully mysterious method of showing us we are not in control. Remember that your journey is a process. Be gentle on yourself, do your best, and keep going—one day at a time.
