What is Transcendental Meditation?

Transcendental Meditation is a form of meditation that uses silent mantras as a technique avoid distracting thoughts and promote relaxation and awareness. Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, the spiritual guru who developed the Transcendental Meditation technique, said, “By enlivening this most basic level of life, Transcendental Meditation is that one simple procedure which can raise the life of every individual and every society to its full dignity, in which problems are absent and perfect health, happiness, and a rapid pace of progress are the natural features of life.”

Transcendental Meditation has been shown to be helpful for men and women suffering from PTSD, domestic abuse survivors, and at-risk youths. Sarah Klein, in a 2016 Prevention article entitled This is Your Brain on Transcendental Meditation, explains, “Another recent PTSD study, funded by the David Lynch Foundation, found that TM helped decrease medication use among military members with the condition. After a month, nearly 84% of the 37 meditators had stabilized, decreased, or stopped anxiety meds, while about 11% increased their dose. Among the 37 who didn’t meditate, 59% were able to stabilize, decrease, or stop their meds while 40.5% had to increase them.” For men and women in recovery who have faced trauma in the past, the Transcendental Meditation technique may be helpful in managing symptoms.

Research into Transcendental Meditation has yielded surprising health results. According to Robert H. Schneider, in a 2014 Huffington Post article entitled Evidence Shows Transcendental Meditation Has Real Health Benefits, “Research on Transcendental Meditation, for example, has found reduced blood pressure, increased insulin resistance (useful for preventing diabetes), slowing of biological aging and even a 48 percent reduction in the rates of heart attack, stroke and death. I would consider those to be benefits. And so does the American Heart Association, which last year released a statement saying that decades of research indicate TM lowers blood pressure and may be considered by clinicians as a treatment for high blood pressure.” Additionally, studies on the health effects of Transcendental Meditation have shown that it can reduce chronic pain, anxiety, cholesterol, and practitioners are less likely to need medical services.
