Should You Take a Multivitamin?

In early recovery, we are in a process of rebuilding our physical health. During our time in active addiction, we rarely gave much consideration to proper nourishment, and our physical health. The body needs vitamins and nutrients for proper functioning, and taking a multivitamin may be an effective way to get the vitamin and nutrients we need.

Another study found that in children and teenagers (ages 9 to 18), ‘taking supplements added nutrients (for example, magnesium, phosphorus, and vitamins A, C, and E) for which intakes would have been inadequate from food alone,’ according to study author Regan Bailey of the National Institutes of Health.”

Additional benefits of multivitamins may include increased energy levels, improved mood, improved short-term memory and cognitive function, and improved muscle strength. Multivitamins may also be effective in reducing feelings of stress and anxiety that are all too common in early sobriety. According to UniLab, “The vitamins and minerals in your daily multivitamin can also significantly reduce levels of stress and anxiety. The body uses B vitamins to convert food into energy, keep the nervous system functioning properly, and to produce stress hormones. Taking multivitamins daily can replenish your body’s supply.” Overall, the research into potential benefits may be mixed, but even the minor proven benefits of multivitamins could be helpful to those in early sobriety as they are healing from the damages caused by addiction.
