Need to Change? 7 Habits to a New You

New recovery means you need to change your life, and not just one or two things. In order to do that, it helps to develop some habits that will set you up for success and support your recovery for the long term. Try each of these, one at a time, and keep yourself accountable by publicly committing to them:

  1. Think positively – This is incredibly important in recovery. If you allow yourself to think negative thoughts, you are setting yourself up for failure. Think positively and good things will happen.
  2. Exercise – No matter how much you may not like this one, do it. You will feel better about yourself, which means you will be thinking more positively, and it greatly reduces stress. Plus, it’s the natural way to get those feel-good chemicals that we love so much.
  3. Work on one task – Instead of doing things chaotically, i.e., multi-tasking, you will accomplish more and be less stressed—it’s a win-win.
  4. One goal at a time – Just like single-tasking above, if you focus on achieving one goal at a time, you are putting more power into doing so rather than spreading yourself thin.
  5. Find the essential, get rid of what is not – This works in all areas of your life. Find and keep what you love most (as long as it is healthy and supports your recovery), and eliminate everything else. Whether it’s bad relationships or emails, weed it out so you can focus on what is most important.
  6. Be kind – It may not sound like it, but it is a habit. Start by doing something nice for another person every day. If you make kindness a priority in your life, you will see returns. People will respond to you differently, and so will the universe—it’s called karma.
  7. Keep a routine – Having a routine in recovery is very important. It keeps us balanced, and we don’t feel thrown off by constant change. Have a morning, day, and evening routine that will help keep you safe in your sobriety and will help you to prepare for tomorrow.
