I GET to…

Life is full of inconvenience and hassle. It is also full of joy, creativity, and spontaneity. Addiction isn’t full of any of these things—not even inconvenience or hassle. It is full of much worse. Inconvenience and hassle would be welcome compared to jail, car accidents, fights, and court appearances. In addiction, you can forget experiencing anything related to happiness; there is nothing fun, creative, or spontaneous about having zero freedom to do what you choose, be your true self, and go wherever your heart desires.

Recovery gives you freedom. This freedom translates into not being in a prison cell for 23 hours a day. It lifts the fear and paranoia of leaving your home. Freedom from addiction removes the mental obsession we have over our love affair with drugs and alcohol. In sobriety, we don’t have to do anything. Rather, we get to live life on life’s terms. In addiction, You have to wake up, eat, and sleep whenever the prison guards so choose. You have to drink more or take more to stop withdrawal. You have to do whatever it takes to keep your disease alive. In recovery, you get to wake up, eat, and sleep whenever you want, you get to say no to chemicals, and you get to work a program of recovery to keep your disease in remission.

If you start feeling burdened or annoyed that you have to drive to work in the early morning hours while the sky is pouring rain, remember that you get to drive there and you get to have a job. Remind yourself what it was like when your life centered on your drug of choice, and think about what it would feel like to lose all that you have worked for in sobriety. The thought of reverting back into the mental prison of addiction should scare the daylights out of you. Appreciate where you are at in recovery, because there are no guarantees. This is gratitude, and without it, many of us will fall right back into the vicious cycle of addiction.
