How to Grow Gratitude: 5 Tips to Cultivation

Gratitude can make or break your recovery. People who are thankful tend to cope with stress better, have more meaningful relationships, sleep better, have stronger immune systems, and have higher self-esteem, just to name a few. Gratitude keeps us grounded, and it reminds us of how fortunate we are to have found ourselves in recovery. If you are feeling a little opposite of gratitude, below are a few tips to help it grow:

  1. Put It on Paper – Writing out specific things for which you are thankful inspires your mind to think of more things you are grateful to have in your life. Try keeping a journal for 30 days, and notice how your thoughts and stories develop.
  2. Say It Out Loud – Tell others about your gratitude. It will open the conversation, plus it will strengthen your attitude and give positive reinforcement to your subconscious.
  3. Practice Meditation – If you don’t meditate already, you should consider making it a part of your recovery. To help cultivate gratitude, focus on being thankful in your daily meditations. Envision someone who brings a smile to your face, and picture your life full of everything that brings you joy.
  4. Show Your Appreciation – Think of someone who positively impacted your life, and write her a letter. Send a little gift like a journal or chocolates to someone who loves and supports you, and include a note expressing your gratitude. Not only will doing niceties for others feel good, but the impact you may have on them—even if it’s just brightening their day—is so worth it.
  5. Surround Yourself with Gratitude – If you choose to be around people who are happy in their lives and thankful for their recovery, it will rub off on you. People who are negative, speak poorly of others, fantasize about drinking or using, and have a hard time vocalizing the good things in their life, will also rub off on you. It is so important to be picky and choosy with your time and with your friends—especially in recovery.
