The Horrors of PCP

Phencyclidine, better known as PCP, is a dissociative anaesthetic capable of producing distorted perceptions, severe hallucinations, and violent behavior. PCP is one of the most dangerous drugs in the world because the effects of taking the substance are entirely unpredictable.

According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, “at moderate to high doses, PCP can cause a user to have seizures or severe muscle contractions, become aggressive or violent, or even experience psychotic symptoms similar to schizophrenia.” The psychosis that can result from PCP use may lead to extremely violent behaviors.

There are many high-profile cases of PCP leading to violence and terrifying situations. Christina Ng, in a 2012 ABC News article entitled Two Grisly Child Murders Prompt PCP Crackdown in New Jersey, explains how PCP was a factor in the murders of a 6-year-old boy and a 12-year-old. Jason Laughlin, spokesman for the Camden County Prosecutor’s Office, told ABC News, “You’ve got paranoia, anxiety, delusional behavior, hallucinations and then you add to that a disconnect between the mind and body so the person doesn’t feel pain and can behave as if they have superhuman strength”  The combination of strong hallucinations and dissociation can lead to people committing violent acts without remembering what happened.

One of the most high-profile cases in recent memory is the story of rapper Andre Johnson, also known as Christ Bearer. In 2014, after a PCP binge, Johnson cut off his own penis and jumped from a second story balcony. According to Snejana Farberov, in a 2015 Daily Mail article, “Describing his state of mind in the moment, Johnson said he felt like he was in a ‘cartoon world’ as he sat in his manager’s North Hollywood apartment high on a cocktail of drugs and watching the animated series Family Guy and American Dad.” Afterwards, Johnson cut off his penis and jumped from a balcony, missing the concrete pavement by only a few inches.

The dangers of PCP gained major media attention in 2002 when a rapper named Antron Singleton, better known as Big Lurch brutally murdered his girlfriend Tynisha Ysais. Lurch’s lawyer, Milton Grimes, told jurors, “PCP affects the brain to where people go back to their primal state. You can do the acts of a beast… because you don’t have the conscience of a human being, and that’s where this man was when he took this woman’s life.” Singleton tortured and stabbed Ysais repeatedly before engaging in cannibalism. Sadly, stories like these are all too common. In some cases, PCP can cause extreme violence and aggression, causing people to do horrific things while under its influence.
