Grief in Recovery: 7 Self-Care Tips

Many of us don’t know how to cope with loss without the assistance of drugs or alcohol, and it is yet another learning process of recovery. Below are self-care tips to help you move through the pain while keeping your sobriety intact.

  1. There Is No Timeline for Grief – Grief is not linear, so do not feel as though there is a timeline that you should base your feelings. Everyone experiences grief differently and the length of time for which you feel your own pain is not related to anyone else.
  2. Be Gentle on Yourself – Some days, you may feel overwhelmed with tears and sadness. Let yourself feel this and don’t beat yourself up by telling yourself otherwise. It is okay to feel, and it is okay to let yourself grieve just how you need to grieve. If that looks like being curled up with a box of tissues and Netflix, so be it.
  3. Talk to People – Seek out those who allow you your grief, such as a counselor, family, and friends. Support groups are also a wonderful place to vent with others who have similar experiences.
  4. Put Time Aside – If you have a busy life, give yourself time to let your grief out. Cry or scream in your car; whatever it takes, don’t push the pain away.
  5. It’s Okay to Feel Joy – Let yourself enjoy moments, too. Hang out with your friends, go see a movie, take a roadtrip. Life is meant to be enjoyed, so allow yourself to feel this comfort.
  6. Plan for Bad Days – This could be anniversaries or birthday’s, or any day that may trigger emotions. Have coping mechanisms in place before these days arrive. Go to a meeting, share what’s going on, and let others know what is coming up.
  7. Honor Your Grief – It is your own, and there is no right or wrong way to do it. Grief is love with nowhere to go, but you can continue to carry that love in your heart.
